    Great intro Robert.

You could side step the copy part and set up a symbolic link to the theme you are starting with. So on a linux server this would look like
    cd /app/design/frontend/mypackage
    ln -s ../default/blank default
    and repeat for the skin
    cd /skin/frontend/mypackage
    ln -s ../default/blank default

The upside to this is that you will get upgrades to the blank theme automatically. The downside is that linked directories need special attention when moving to a new server or backing up.

    Hello Robert,
It is nice article. I am facing problem with Magento new theme installation. I already have installed newtheme at magento by copying files at app and particular folder via FTP. After copy files , I have set new theme for pages at CMS tab CMS -> Pages – Design menu. It is showing new theme for all pages mentioned at CMS-> Pages section. However some dynamic pages re not there like My Cart, My Account, Check Out, Login etc..
How to set new theme for that pages?
    Thanks

Thank you! I was thinking this would be the way to go but there are so many conflicting opinions out there. This one makes the most sense to me and works.

I would like to share TemplateToaster, it is a Windows based software for designing custom Magento Themes from scratch, or you can start with a pre designed theme and modify it: http://templatetoaster.com
